Adding Weight To Your Arrow

I think that I get the why, to a point. interested in the how...... as I am sure there are several different ways to do this
I just read, quickly, up on foc\'s. I have never worried about that before.....

Don\'t be overly concerned about FOC. With even 8% you are good to go. My only advice would be....if you need to add weight to achieve a certain desired finished weight then make sure your arrow is stiff enough so you can add it to your tip end. That way you get the benefit of added weight and more FOC. With regard to penetration I feel it is WAY more important to have a heavier arrow (regardless if you have great FOC or not) and a tuned bow(perfect arrow flight) than it is to have extreme FOC.

so I balanced my arrow, and after taking measurements, my foc is 10.9%. I have never weighed the entire arrow set up.....

If you have clean flight and are happy with your arrow weight you are good to go. The whole FOC thing is a bit overblown IMHO. Not trying to crap on others I just don\'t think it is anything to fret over.

I have never paper tuned..... sometimes it seems as though my arrows wiggle through the air.....

There is nothing better for your setup (whether you shoot 50 lbs or 80 or a 300 grain arrow or a 500 grain arrow) than to have perfect arrow flight. I would strive for this first.

The first thing I do when changing a string or rest is to paper tune. Then I adjust the sights.

now that you mention this.... I cant say for sure, but I think they did that with my string 2 years ago..... I just know that I haven\'t done it myself.

I would recommend paper shooting every so often.
As the strings/cables stretch & wear it will throw everything out of tune

Its easy.
Take a roll of freezer paper and hang it up in front of your target chest high, weigh the end of the paper down a bit and step back about 6ft and shoot.

Shoot a few times, make sure your grip & form is good

It will give you a good idea of any tears

If broadheads and FT hit together. Good to go. I use paper tuning as a jumping off point.

It\'s a pleasant surprise if broadheads fly great from there.

You can even cut opposite ends off a cardboard box and tape newspaper over it.

I built some more arrows last night. I will share the specs for anyone interested.

340 Goldtip XT Hunter arrows (Thanks Dan)

.095 Trimmer line from nock to insert plus 1/4 inch to stop rattle from string. This added 70 grains.

100 gr tip

Total arrow weight 502 gr

Total length 31 1/4

FOC 12.5%

I will be pulling 66-68lbs. I have not decided yet. This weekend I will shoot some paper to check flight then check the sights and start practicing. So far at 20 and 30 yds the trimmer line did not effect my sights any. I shot maybe 1.5 inches low at 40 yds compared to my un-weighted arrows.

I hope this set up will give me a pass through on some elk lungs.

wow.

my buddy is a hulk. he shoots an 80 lb Mathews Monster. his shafts are 530. he showed up at the range and i was shooting 100 yards. he tried as well. he missed my did hit the target on the edge. that shaft buried itself deep. i had to jog back and get my arrow gripper thing.

my arrows pulled out easier, but they were not \"on the edge\". his arrows hammer in!! so will yours!

tell me more on, moving the rest up...... I usually just move the entire sight down, to get the broadheads to hit where they should. I just shoot broadheads once its a month out from hunting.

The adjustment should make both BH and FP come together. When you adjust you are moving your rest in the direction you want your broadhead to go. The change effects the BH more than the FP and eventually they will impact together assuming you don\'t have another issue.
