Good luck, Jeff!

Tell us about the encounter 2 nights ago. :upthumb:

I need to update this thread to outline some of the adventures Colt and I had this weekend.

I had to skip the opener last weekend for Blacktail, because my Daughter is home on Recruiter Assistance leave, she turned 21, and she wanted to go wine tasting in NAPA. Here\'s a pic she took of me at Ferarri-Carano Vineyards...I\'ve entitled it \"the Loin King\" :D

On Thursday evening, my Son noticed flies buzzing around our front deck, and a very bad smell. I crawled under to check, and found a dead spotted fawn.

It was really weird and sad...I\'d been watching this Mom with twins all Summer, and I was pretty sure this was one of the twins. I could recognize the Mom, because she had a broken leg that has healed, you can see it in this pic. She had twins here last Summer as well.

I went through the trailcam records, and the last time I saw the Mom with both fawns was on the 15th. At 4 AM, both fawns were feeding and alert:

By 2 PM, this fawn looked real sick:
sickfawn_zpsqdirbtlp.jpg

Strangest damn thing I\'ve ever seen...it\'s like the fawn was poisoned or something. :dk:

Anyhow, I hauled the fawn out and tossed it over the back hill. Then, I went down to the lower end of my property, and sat in my treestand. The stand overlooks two good trails, but the lower trail is around 50 yards going through a small meadow, there are no trees high enough to get close to it (I like \'em good and high) :upthumb:

Well, about 7:30 PM this dumbass spike comes right under me, and I\'m watching him for a while, when I catch movement off to my right on the lower trail. Buck!

But, I forgot my binoculars, and my distance vision is crap! So I could not see the forks for sure, even though he seemed high and wide enough to be legal. And anyway, it was just outside my comfort zone for a good shot. He proceeds down the trail below the stand, then crosses over to the trail that leads under the stand...just made a big circle at 50 yds :x

He went in the brush, and I never saw him again :(

So, I get up early Friday, and head to the pig property. There are a few bucks around there, and I would have the added bonus of being able to stick a hog if it worked out. Plus, I needed to pull the trailcam card.

Nothing came in to the pond. When I got home and checked the card, there had been quite a few pigs coming in toward evening, before the end of legal shooting time:

So, I e-mail the landowner and tell him I\'m coming back out for an evening sit. Colt and I were feeling lucky!

About 8PM, I hear them coming. Next thing you know, pigs are coming in like crazy, a big family group of maybe 20. Every time a pig would get close to the stand, the lead sow would grunt, and they\'d bug out. There were two boars on my right, but I couldn\'t get a hole to shoot through. I tried to draw on them once, and when my bow scraped a branch, that bitch sounded the \"move it out\" alarm, and they were all outta there. She is a smart old bitch :x

So, Colt and I go home again defeated, and we decided to sit the stand on my lower property again in the morning. About 7:30, I see our doe appear right out in front of the stand. Damn...didn\'t see the other fawn...maybe she lost them both? :dk:

All of a sudden, the surviving fawn explodes out of the brush, skids under the Mom\'s belly like he\'s sliding in to home plate, and starts hitting the speedbag :haha:

Colt and I were happy to see this :upthumb:

No bucks showed, and we are down to our last Evening sit, and then I will ship him off to Dan first thing Monday AM. I only got one Weekend to hunt with Colt, but we tried to make the most of it. And, after all, it\'s all about the adventure anyway, am I right?

Great write up, Jeff. Good luck tonight on your final sit.
What branch did your daughter join?

That is very unusual for the fawn....
Do you guys have snakes or anything poisonous?

I hope the other fawn makes it through.
I also hope you get a crack at some pigs!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck. You are right, it\'s all about the adventure. :up thumb:

I leave next Saturday for my trip and you are only 2 states away. I wouldn\'t imagine it being more than a day or two to get here standard shipping.
You should keep hunting a few more days before you ship it.

Will you be hunting monday or tuesday?

Rattlers! Didn\'t think of that...very possible this time of Year...it\'s been hot as hell here and that always brings them out

If anything, it will just be on my property. I don\'t want to cut it too close.

nice Knife pun ;)

See bold ^

and good luck, Jeff!

Colt and I decided we would take anything legal. Wouldn\'t you know it, two bucks got off on \"technicalities\"

This one had a bent spike, but no \"bump\" I could hang a ring on:

Then this one shows up, and looks legal at first glance...close inspection revealed two spikes coming from the same base...so not legal!

So Colt is on his way to Dan as of this A.M., I\'ve got a good feeling that his luck will turn! :upthumb:

Great pictures, Jeff. You know what will happen right?
Tonight a P&Y Blacktail will walk out in front of you at 20 yards broadside.

Thanks for taking us hunting, Jeff! Be honest, you could care less about them Blacktails, you\'re focused on a backcountry elk adventure right now ;)
