Here is a short video clip of a bull.
The \'guesstimate\' happens at the 1:20 mark
See what you guess before then!

I thought he was somewhere around 320 before the score was posted. The rack looks comparable to Stringunner\'s bull, but I think some of the times on the one here are a little smaller. Still, to me it is an excellent bull.

Not to hijack Brad\'s thread, but how do you field judge the antler score on a bull elk?
I usually go with a shoot or don\'t shoot thought first. After that it is something that can wait until the animal is on the ground. If it was a bull I could not get to; I multiply my initial estimate by a factor of 1.25 for my story back at camp. 99.99 times out of 100 if I can see antlers my choice is to Shoot, if I can make a clean kill. I can score it later if I am interested. If I have packing help back at camp, I underscore it by 25% so they are less reluctant to come out and help, and because they will be more impressed with the bull :D
All kidding aside, when it comes to judging these pictures I look at the brow tines first. If they extend out to the end of the nose it is a big bull. Next I look at the sword tines and thirds. The size of the sword tines is a significant factor as well as the thirds. Last I check the whale tale tops to see if they are well developed, and the mass of the antlers. All of this information is fed into the Swedeometer for computation.
In the video I noticed the brow tines were average and well short of extending to the end of the nose. The sword tines and thirds were short and not well developed. The mass and whale tales were relatively small for a trophy bull. Lastly, I considered some other bull I knew the score of, and made an estimate. I am sure more experience with large bulls would help make the Swedeometer more precise. I am sure others have their way of judging that works for them. What is yours?

I was discussing this topic with iccyman this morning and my swedeometer for judging is the tops first - 4th thru 6th points.
If the top is good, the bottom is good.
If the top is average, the bottom is average.

But thats only after it\'s a \'shoot or no shoot bull\'

That was the first thing I looked at.
4ths looks great and the rest up top looked meh....

280 gross. I didn\'t look at Jay\'s \"guesstimate (still haven\'t). He\'s narrow, has weak G1-G2s, thin beams.

I just studied this again and looked at Jay\'s \"guesstimate\". I believe he\'s off by 2\" on almost all of estimates. If he thinks those G1s are 14 and 13, he\'s dreaming. They are 12 and 11. Same with the thirds. From that point on everything else is inflated. The inside spread of the main beams is 30. I just stuck a tape on several bulls around my office with similar tines at each of those spots. Still going with 285, tops.

Because of the symmetry the bull looks bigger on video than he will actually score. Still a great bull if he\'s OTC and public land. If he\'s in a limited unit, I\'d walk away unless it was close to the end of the season.

The beauty of videos and photos like these is that unless the bull is later killed, nobody really knows for sure!

Ok, I just noticed that Jay Scott is an outfitter. That\'s what I would call an \"outfitter 300 bull\". As in, \"Oh yeah, that\'s a nice 300 bull! Great bull for this area!\" Later, the client is happy that he killed a pretty bull and isn\'t too concerned about the score. If he says anything, which he won\'t because he\'s never shot a bill that big anyway, Jay can tell him, \"Those bottoms looked longer when he was out there a ways. I guess that\'s what threw me off, but he\'s still a great trophy bull!

This is exactly along the lines of my thoughts. When I saw his numbers, I thought he was inflating them a bit, especially the G1s and 2s.

I\'m glad you guys are thinking he is smaller also. I was thinking in the 280\'s. But after my last guess I was thinking I was way off after seeing the score he had in the vid.

Something I want to throw out......

At the end it\'s this guys GUESS.

He could be horrible at it............
