Most guys would give an arm and a leg to be able to hunt an elk rich environment like you have. So long as you don\'t let them get a whiffed of you, you will be able to hunt them for several days. And even if you are unable to close the deal, you are getting one heck of an education.
Sounds like you did most things right by sneaking in close and putting the challenge on him. I would have done the same thing. But nothing is 100%. Be sure to take your tube and a good reed with you the next time. Another trick would be to get him going with your cow mews. And if he tries to call you to him, throw a younger bull bugle at him just once and do some raking to let him know just why the cow can\'t come to him.
The way I learned to bugle and make most of my sounds was by listening to real elk from a distance and mocking them. Sounds like you are in a good spot to do just that. You are a lucky hunter for sure. So after you get one down, keep going back to the area and practice talking to them.
