Iccyman001\'s 2015 Hunting Journal

To bring you guys up to speed, I have been having this constant daily battle and it\'s driving me nuts.

This will be my second year hunting elk ever. So as expected, I should be excited to shoot the first elk that I see.
HOWEVER, I am not new to hunting. I\'ve been scouting a bunch, I\'ve been doing my research, practicing everything that I possibly can, and I know I have a good inventory of more mature bulls in my location.

So the daily battle is exactly this:

Do you shoot the first elk that you see or do you hunt something bigger.

So I get to thinking deeper. It\'s only a 14 day hunt, I love the meat, and it would be awesome to say you went 2 for 2 elk hunting with a bow.
Then you hit the other side. It\'s 14 days and you know the area well, you have a good chance of seeing a few bigger/more mature bulls.

SO then I reflect on last year. First elk hunt ever, first day, and I tag out. What did I REALLY learn out there?
Then I say, if I go in trying to nab a bigger bull, this will force me to pass up smaller ones, which will give me plenty of elk experience.

Well, I am done playing this battle and I am making my final choice today.

This hunting season I will only shoot a bigger bull the first 5 days. Because I can\'t age them on the fly, my bull must be a minimum of a 4x4.
After the first 5 days, my next 5 days will be a 3x3 minimum and then finally my last 4 days will be any legal elk, other than a calf.

This is written in stone as you see it and here is why.

I have many goals this year for my elk hunt: Gain experience, meat, and challenge myself.

With the requirements that I have set myself, I am confident that this is the best choice for me.

:upthumb:

Even if this goal means I leave the mountain empty handed, I gain 14 days of elk experience.
I think many of you can agree that is far more worth it.

Sounds like a good plan. I hope you get a nice one the first 5 days. You should have a chance with all the scouting you have done. If the bulls are still around. You can shoot the first thing that comes by in Idaho if you end up with tag soup in NM, but I doubt you will strike out in NM. I like elk meat and am not sure I could hold out without knowing an area good or having more experience. I have shot 2 in the last 3 years with a near miss the third year, Before that I was 4 years with tag soup. I have learned some and hope to keep the streak up.

What are your guy\'s Idaho hunt dates?

September 12-26. I am leaving Iowa on the 11th and driving to Minnesota and when Gary gets off work we will head out. I have always hunted earlier. I hope they are more vocal during those dates.

Well, my Saturday scouting trip was bitter sweet.

I took my friend out there with his two boys. He works on base with me and grew up in Alabama. I told him to put in for some elk draws this year and if he drew, I would help him out. So he drew the unit that I am hunting, but his hunt will be the first rifle hunt in the unit.

We got up there after a very late start and arrived at camp around 130 in the morning. It\'s been raining like crazy up there and vegetation was high.
Me in my tired stage, tried to turn my trailer around and ripped all of my sewage/gray water piping off and broke my storage tanks. :x :x :x

After we got set up we \"went to bed.\" By went to bed I mean everyone else slept, but I sat there all wired and pretty mad about the trailer.
6AM came around real quick and I didn\'t sleep, so I knew it was going to be a rough day.

The goal of the weekend was to move a camera, put up another camera, and scout a bunch of areas that I needed to see.
I want to be able to connect all the dots on the elk movement and one specifically.

Over the course of the day we scouted about 8 miles, but we went through the nastiest stuff you could possibly imagine, climbed extremely steep cliffs, and just made it all work. We had a very successful hike up until it was lunch time......

We had just started cleaning up from lunch and all of this sudden a REALLY bad storm rolled in.... Thunder, lightning, flash flooding, and hail.
If we cut through the woods we were about 2 miles from camp, but with a giant cliff to go down and a giant cliff to go up.
So to play it on the safe side and not slip on something, get swept away by mountain run off, or struck by lightning, we decided to take the road home.
It was a mile and a half hike to the road on a path and then we were 7 miles away from camp....

The temps went from 60 to 40s, hail started falling in certain spots so bad that it looked like it had snow, lightning was striking trees and making them explode etc. It was NO fun!

We walked about 3 of the 7 miles and FINALLY a nice guy with a pickup truck came and saved the day. I was never so happy to see someone else.
I think that if I would have had a normal nights sleep and not be hiking on my toe for the first time since surgery, I would have been fine, but MAN was I hurting. I was very impressed by my friends boys. They were 12 and 14 and they did great at keeping up with us.

All in all I am pleased. I was able to mark some great spots, tie together some areas I know the elk are crossing, and more.

My big bull is still showing up on my cameras and he is staying in a very small area.

That was still legal shooting hours :upthumb:

I also had these guys show up...

Cool picture

Glad to hear you all made it back safely.

Great pictures. Your elk unit looks extremely promising. Thanks for sharing.

I hope you are recovering well today and get some needed rest. Someone told me that our bodies do the most healing when we sleep. I don\'t know if it is true or not.

I would absolutely agree that most of it is done while healing.
There have been many of times where I have done super long trips or adventures. Sure, just sitting in resting helps a little, power naps or cat naps help even more, but there is nothing more revitalizing than a good nights sleep.

I woke up this morning a little sore, but I feel so much better. I plan on a good day of stretching and taking it easy, then right back to working out tomorrow.

As far as my unit, it\'s looking very good......

this was another picture from last week.

Also, one REAL cool thing from the trip was I found my first shed!!!!

I know it\'s not a full one, but I found it and that\'s all that matters. If you saw where I found it you would never believe it....

It seems like billy goat country

man I wish I would have drawn nm...... next year, with some luck. I am jealous that you can get some much time in learning the area and seeing their habits. that is huge! I am just happy to be going back to a spot where I know that I have found them before....
I still haven\'t pinpointed where the satellites are at night so that I can find them right away in the morning. well, I did have one bull that was pretty consistent, but the spot I found him every morning wasn\'t conducive for an ambush. and I tried..... I just don\'t know where he was coming from to get to that spot.

Looks like you found a great bull hole. But where are all the cows? Just remember, where the cows are is where the bulls will be in September. I\'m looking for you to nail a nice one this season. Good luck!

I have cow pictures, I just figured I\'d post the big boys for show :D
I have some great different areas that the cows will be this year, but I am being on my best behavior and staying out of there until he season opens.

I am really hoping to nail a nice one too.

Thanks, Bill :upthumb: :upthumb: :upthumb:

Heading up tomorrow evening for a full day of scouting on Saturday.

It\'s the final one, so I am going all out :D

Well,

I had another fantastic scouting trip.
We have LOTS of elk on our cameras, fat cows, rags, and stud bulls!

Some are shown in here

My mind goes crazy every night and day. Only 14 days until I\'ll be in the mountains and 16 days until my hunt starts.
I am just ready to get up there and hunt my heart out. I\'ve put a lot of prep time into this year and want to take an elk to show as my reward.

I failed at taking pictured again.... I really need to get better with it.

I did snap a few with my phone though.
Alan made us some breakfast sandwiches for breakfast and they were good good good!
