Shed Hunting

Went out Saturday and found one. Nothing big but I will try to take a picture later and put it up here. Sucks about those locked up bucks but atleast you know what happened to them.

will, I found the same. easier winter seems to mean a later drop date even seeing some bigger deer with the horns still on elk will probably be the first of april before I go looking much maybe even later.
best from last year never could find the other side.

i have never found a shed, which is mind boggling as much time as i spend outdoors.
now, if you wanna go tick hunting, im your man

That really isn\'t terribly shocking to me. It might very well be a function of a few things. For one it maybe you are hunting higher elevations than where the elk are when they are dropping their gear? One of the areas I hunt, I will never find a shed as it has several feet of snow in there up until June. I would suspect anyone hunting areas that are 8,000 plus in elevation is going to have a tough time finding any? This is just speculation on my part though. They other factor is shed hunting is a whole different ball game. It is actually more a testament to your hunting skill than anything. You probably have a better skill set in one key area than I do. You have trained yourself throughout your whole hunting career to scan ahead...look forward as you walk and not at your feet. I have a bad habit of looking at my feet to see where to step quietly...and it has cost me numerous time not spotting the animal before he spotted me. But in shed hunting....especially in the dark timber... you need to look down, and spend a considerable amount of time looking down at the ground. Any ding dong can find a shed in the middle of a grass field but in the timber...different game. My buddy and I used to do a lot of shed picking for blacktail and I have literally been watching so close to the ground in front of me I once found a shed he stepped over to keep moving forward! At first I thought he was messing with me....he picked his feet up to avoid stepping on it! It was a decent chocolate brown 4 pt that blended in extremely well. I gave him a ton of grieve over that! I think I threw it at him even. lol So good for you for not walking that way. But for shed picking you need to retrain your brain and eyes to look for them. That\'s if you want to find more sheds....

Good observation Olympus. I know that what personally hampers my shed hunting is a rather severe case of ADD. Seems I can concentrate hard on looking for only a short time then I have to stop, remind myself to look and go again. :(

same here. I lose concentration easily....

A friend of mine found these. He found the right one two weeks ago and the left one today. the gross score on them is 96 2/8 on the right and 97 4/8 on the left. Throw in an average inside spread and I don\'t have to tell you what kind of whitetail this is on the hoof for a typical!
Oh! he has some turkeys on his place too! ;)

That\'s it...... I\'m moving to Kansas.

Great finds and that\'s a MONSTER buck.

When finding these WT sheds, are they near the winter food source?
Or are they back in the woods?

That is a great find!

That\'s a great set of sheds. Yep I would be drooling If I saw a buck like that. Turkey\'s to, I think Dan might be right :upthumb:

Sorry Brad, I didn\'t see your question. Around here, the food source and timber are together. Most creek bottoms I hunt aren\'t much over a couple of hundred yds. wide, winding back and forth for several miles with crop fields on both sides with a woody pasture occasionally thrown in. Walking the creek usually does it with a little more time spent in the pastures. Right now our wheat is just a few inches tall so a glance into the field every once in a while is all it takes for the feeding areas. :)

My son and I went shed hunting today.
A great day to be in the mountains.
There was a bit of snow still in places but the weather was good.
We saw bear tracks and some Mtn lion tracks

Not long after I saw the Mtn lion tracks, I peeked over a rock and looked down to spot my first shed
See it?

We were about 2.5 miles from the truck and decided to loop our way back.
As we were threading our way thru some thick stuff, we both smelled something dead.
We looked to our left and a deer carcass.
A Mtn lion kill!!!
