Aside from being physically fit for the challenge of an elk hunt, my best piece of advice is to be prepared for the emotional highs and lows.  If you?re hunting with a buddy try to be as honest and have open communication throughout your whole trip. Have a predetermined plan for how you will handle disagreements.

I'm excited this season for 2 reasons.

#1 - back at it after 5 years
#2 - I'm taking my brother-in-law for his FIRST Elk hunt!

To prep for this season, I've been doing 1.5 mile hikes with 60lbs in my pack in 30 min. every day and on Saturdays, drop it down to 30ish and do a 6 mile hike. Trying to get my legs in shape cause my last elk hunt destroyed my legs! 8 total miles packing out with no prep. I'm not making that mistake again!

Hopefully hunting Colorado this year. Apply every year for Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona. Wyoming and Arizona are a couple years out. So most likely be doing another OTC Colorado hunt. Any day in the elk woods is a good day!

Put in for the draw for 2nd Archery Elk Hunt in New Mexico ! Unit 6C ! I been Scouting this bull up to this point and I?m so hopeful I can get a chance at being him home !

Tell us what you?re most excited for this season
Last year I hunted with terrible blisters on my feet and hot spots. Got a new pair of boots, and that probably has me almost as excited as well... ELK!!!

2012 opening morning early rifle cow. After this I moved to Tennessee and am finally going again this October! (my knife is in my hand, that's why the rifle looks strange)

I should have almost posted this on the last question, as it is as or more excited as getting a new piece of hunting gear...

My Wife and I have planned a lot of trips this year to do some major hiking and backpacking together. This is the first time that we are going together. She's excited, and so am I! So I am going to be doing a lot of hiking, running and working out. Backpack cardio is something that is harder for me to do where we live, so I am excited to spend more time in the outdoors with my wife and little girl!

my piece of advice is, do some pre-season hiking before hitting the mountains. Know what muscles will get sore and start building them up. Your legs will thank you after packing out an elk. Trust me! Also know that if you're coming from lower elevation, be prepared to run out of breath at high altitude. Drink LOTS of water so you don't get a headache. Get there a few days early to acclimate so your experience will be a good one.

This year I have applied for Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. I didn't draw my Wyoming tag and I don't have enough points for the Colorado tag so I'm hoping and praying for the New Mexico tag. If none are drawn its OTC CO archery.

I'm really excited to be bring to newcomers to elk hunting this year. I was able to take my first bull last year and now have two, maybe three guys who have never been coming. Hoping to get them into some animals.

It's definitely hard keeping in shape working full time, chasing 3 kids, etc. but have been playing lots of basketball and working out when possible to stay in shape enough to get up and down those Rocky Mountains. I also purchased a pair of Crispi Idaho GTX yesterday to try out. I have some Kenetrek Extremes and love them but for the deal I got the Crispi's I couldn't say no. Looks like I'll be test driving those this turkey season.
