What did you do today....

Now that the snow has finally started to melt I\'ve transitioned into mountain speed-hiking mode. After a couple weeks of stretching it out and up I\'ll start carrying the pack with dog food. When the trails dry out I\'ll alternate mountain biking with the speed hikes. I really focus on pushing and recovery to simulate mountain hunting. Very fortunate to be able to do this at 9k feet every day.

My next article is going to be about elk hunting fitness for over-60 seniors.

Iccyman, I liked your initial post asking \"Will you be ready?\" Every time I see max-cleavage Kate Upton asking \"Will you be my hero?\" I yell \"YES I WILL!!!\" at the TV. Cracks my wife up.

After 6 decades of working out hard, and hauling out the meat alone. I have a new plan. My workouts now consist of relaxed hikes in the mountains with my dog. Maybe stop at a creek for some fly fishing, and then cooking up the brookies next to the creek for lunch. No scouting. No steep climbs. Just a slow walk enjoying the terrain.

Yes, but what about getting in shape to haul of the meat you ask? That\'s easy. I\'m paying my neighbor to haul out the meat. Hunt smart, and please pass over the donuts.

Stillhunter, that sounds like the smartest plan! Wish we could do something like that here in CO but the outfitter laws are so strict that you can\'t even offer a dinner to someone for helping you pack meat.

Assuming anybody finds out... ;)

I know you can\'t give away too much meat to someone, but I never heard of a law about someone helping me haul it out. How is it different from other hunters in camp helping haul out the meat? Everybody does that.

Lou.......Yes, you\'re right about the outfitter. That part slipped by me when I read your post. As an individual I can have him haul it out as long as I don\'t pay him in money. I can give him as much processed and packaged meat as I want to. So, I may work it out that way.

hahaha maybe someday you will be her hero.

I printed out a small piece of paper that said \'will you be ready?\" and have a picture of a monster bull on it.
Its the first thing I see in my mirror everyday.....

I will be ready for this year. Elk, mule deer, whitetail, and oryx.... beware.... :train:

just ran my trail. did an extra leg that is about 25 deg uphill. i almost vomited until i slowed it down..made it to the top slow and steady..i was stoked..so stoked i almost did that ROCKY BALBOA thing at the top, double fist pumping the air.

i have these Vinyl sand bags that are used to weigh down temporary construction warning signs. everyone quit using them,..hope it\'s not because they are filled with lead. yikes. they weight 15lbs each. i have three of them. i can speed hike with 30 lbs pretty easy and it is a fantastic workout. i dont like to do it to often, thinking my knees have a finite number of strokes..i dont want to wear them out doing a workout.

i do it during the summer months when it is too hot to jog. night speed hikes with a headlamp. super fun!!

Cliff...I have to occasionally decay radioactive isotopes in my office...so we have all these lead bricks. One of them weighs around 30 pounds...so I stick it in my Badlands Superday for my noon treadmill run/walk every day. I work up a helluva sweat in my air conditioned office!

I had leftover elk meatloaf, fresh asparagus, and mashed potatoes.
That\'s about as close to elk hunting I\'ll get today

took the oldest boy out turkey hunting. chased a tom with no luck. ended up having a jake sneak through at 30 yards. the shooting lanes were too small to get in sync with him pulling the trigger. it was still fun seeing him get amped up!

The badlands pack is pretty much been retired to my \"workout pack\". So not putting food or anything in there. I do wrap the bricks in Slipcovers to keep the sharp edges from piercing the pack. :D

That\'s not fair Brad. I ran out of elk a year ago. I\'d give my left nut for some elk now.

Had a fantastic back workout this morning at about 430.
Have a two mile jog and 15 minutes of jump roping tonight.

Today was a much needed break, but tomorrow is a big day of hiking on Oklahoma with my wife and pups!
