What did you do today....

Just got back from a 2 mile power walk, carrying a 40lb bag of dog food.
No pack, just carrying it.
Switching it from shoulder to shoulder, making it as comfortable as I could [which its not]

Makes you appreciate a pack

Yes no pack makes it rough on the back because you have to lean left or right to keep your center of gravity over your mid section.

How many strays did you have following you?

I have been so busy after work the last week or so.... fire dept training, the fire dept had the beer garden at the fair so been helping after work, picked up the new bay window from menards last night just before the storm, have fire dept meeting tonight, cub scout leader meeting tomorrow night, then we are headed to wyo. at least I will get some actual mtn training out there, maybe I should bring my bow and practice holding it all day while we are hiking

record high temps here.

105!! wow..like my neighborhood thinks it\'s Phoenix AZ or something.

it was a challenge but i woke up at 5:30 am to trail run. went to the trail and there they were; the same bunch of guys that wanted to kick my ass last time. but looked like they multiplied..there were 15 of them on brand spanking new mountain bikes. i u-turned and went home and ran 4 miles on the road. life\'s too short for drama. had a great run!!
i\'m gonna taper off to short exercise drills. i dont want to tweak anything important before the season. i am much better off than my hunt partners..they are all in the wrong direction of physical fitness..whatever. i LIKE it!! the high mountain deer they opt to pass..\"i got this\"

There is no way. I used to work at a pet store. I hated moving bags around. I\'d probably hurt my back now. Glad college paid off. Haha.

Seems like everyone is READY!!!!!!

Talk about some great efforts this year. :upthumb:
Oh, were we suppose to prepare for elk season?

Over the weekend, I did my last scouting. Dummy me did not fully engage one camera\'s switch to the ON position in July. Bummer. Since the cows had not shown up yet, no biggie. Nice 4x4 at 5 pm on Thursday evening 0.25 mile from camp. I will find them opening week. I keep running into moose. I put a trail camera up on a low knoll used by the elk to go between drainages...150 yards from my camp. Cows should be on it by next week.

Friday, I took a nice 6 foot slide down an extremely steep creek embankment. I thought if the elk and deer could go down the embankment, I could too. My left leg collapsed and the slide began on my ass and back. A rock in the creek kept me from going into the creek by using my outstretched right foot. My Arc\'teryx knee caps saved my left knee from a bad rock hit. My left arm took a hit. My shirt was torn and turned green from grass stains. Good to get that over with. Smooth sailing from now on.

Made plans with hunting partner. He may claim my camping spot early, so I don\'t have to fret getting it.

Yesterday, I started packing. 90% of the gear is sorted and staged. Bleached and rinsed the coolers.

This evening, a tornado warning blew my 3D plans. I opted for eating sushi as the alternative which has nothing to do with elk hunting. :eh:

This thread was a huge help for me. Despite early critics, the group helped pull me along. I felt like I didn\'t want to be left behind. :)

Thanks team elk-shape.!!!! Now the fun part!

mtnmutt,
Do you still have deer showing up?
Yes, sir...plenty of those mule deer and the same ones. Mostly does, but I am cool with a doe. Good news, my local hunting partner will process my meat. He used to be a butcher. Therefore, I do not need to interrupt my week to trek back home. Heck, he even generously offered me some of his hog meat from a TX hog hunt he did this past Winter.

I am not worried about the lack of elk pictures. I placed the cameras in new spots that I already saw them in last season for opening week (1st location) and closing week (2nd location). The elk just need a little push to get them in those 2 spots. I already have my go to location for opening weekend that is tried and true from opening day through opening week. I am not fretting it. I am counting on the hordes of archery hunters showing up opening weekend before hunting the 1st camera location. For the 2nd location, we will glass it before heading there for a spike camp.

I\'m so glad everyone got into it. I know it helped me push myself harder too.
I always give it my all, but group encouragement will always push people to their next level.

Now I can\'t wait to see the results pay off..

Now that is GREAT NEWS!!!! I am really excited for your hunt and cannot wait to hear about it.
Imagine an elk and deer combo!!!!! :upthumb:

Good luck, ma\'am :upthumb:

Felt guilty not doing something today, so I jumped on the treadmill doing the mountain peaks workout 1-8% incline and some intervals of running. My final workout push this week.

I am all fired up today for some reason...

Maybe it\'s the fact in 14 days from today I\'ll be chasing wapiti.....

And I don\'t mean Travis

Back workout and core.....DONE!

Just got back from a 3 mile \'40lb dog food\' walk, but this time with my Kelty Cache Hauler.
Big difference!

please tell us..do you at least have a dog? :D

if you do, the dog is probably thinking, \"now where the hell is he going with that?\"

i work for the Highway dept. you know those big orange highway construction signs they put up..usually say something cool like \"flagman ahead\" or some other tidbit.

to keep them from blowing over, we use big bags of lead shot. they are very orange and very strong, and have a handle on them. well..someone said. \"lead? that can be safe\"
we had to quit using them. (i wonder what happened to them?). i grabbed two and together they are a perfect 30 lbs. very compact, very clean, and very good backpack ballast. folded over a bit, they form the best nesting point for bench shooting a rifle. hahah..

i need to find one more. i think 45 lbs would be perfect.
