What did you do today....

Last night I gathered all of my gear for when I help my 2 brother\'s and nephew on their mule deer hunt in a few weeks where we are backpacking in about 5 miles for up to 8 days. I have also been getting food together for the hunt (striving for a minimum of 100 calories or more per oz). The plan is to meet tomorrow night and have our packs loaded and ready to go as if we were leaving the next day. We will then empty out our packs, go through everyone\'s gear/food/clothing and remove duplicate items, split up gear that can be shared, get rid of stuff that doesn\'t need to go, figure out how to strap the rifles to the packs in order to get our packs dialed in for the hunt.

One of my brothers and my nephew haven\'t done a lot of hunting like this, so it is good to see what their pack capacity is, what they are bringing so that they aren\'t bringing anything they shouldn\'t or don\'t have something they should. This will help get us all on the same page and ready for the hunt!

Got a nice leg workout out of the way today.
Tonight I am going to be doing some serious shooting and more packing of the trailer!!!!

I rolled out bed about 4am this morning.
As my feet hit the foot, my left knee \'creaked\'...
Hmmmm. That kinda hurt! Ruh - Roh!!!
Did some stretches and had some coffee and got ready for my 3 miler

Still had enough pain to not carry my pack so I just did a light walk/jog.
It took a couple miles, but the pain subsided and it feels much better now

Whew, getting old sucks

Yes it does...... Take it easy Brad. It is to late to get hurt. Season is just around the corner. If your not ready now it is to late to get ready just keep everything loosened up and moving.

I had some major pain in my left knee after my Colorado scouting trip last week. It took a couple days for it to go away because I really abused it desending some steep stuff.

Words of wisdom.

The one thing that I hate about my 51 year old body is the longer duration it takes to heal after an injury.

When training for a race, the training schedule calls for reducing training 5-6 days before the race with 2 rest days before the race. I do the same for hunting. My hunt starts Saturday, August 29th. My last intense workout will be Sunday. My last light workout will be Wednesday.

Next week, this old(er) chick will be doing an epsom salt bath to heal whatever is left to heal. Magnesium is great for the muscles whether in a bath or a diet. Of course, I will cheat and also get a full body deep tissue massage next week. Then there is the Motrin that I cherish at camp and in my pack.

Brad, I hope the knee feels better soon. Even with a bum knee, the elk don\'t stand a chance with you in the woods.

rotroh!!

take it easy team!!

yesterday was the first day i DIDNT make my trail run. i couldnt complete it. my lungs were just not there. there is a lot of smoke in the air from the wildfires and i think my Asthma was acting up. i didnt push it and HAD TO WALK a portion. it sucked..it sucked mentally. i\'m not an asthma expert..i actually didnt even know i had it. (doctor handed me a presciption for some inhalers and i asked..what\'s this for? \"for your asthma.\" what asthma..i dont have asthma\")

i\'m not gonna run today. just going to build up a pile of gear to throw into my truck. it\'s time to pack!! and to buy some last minute food to get into the freezer. if i\'m not ready now..i\'ll never be.

i\'d rather run..i hate packing. hate it with a passion.

I have mild exercise induced asthma. I rarely use my inhaler. My worst episodes were during the 2 days when the Waldo Canyon fire erupted and ash was falling at my house. I had drafty windows and work at home. I almost packed up and went to my brother\'s in Denver because I could not breathe well. That was the most I ever used my inhaler. I avoided all aerobic exercise during the Waldo Canyon fire. Too much smoke.

Don\'t worry this old dog will be nipping at your heels. You better not stop or I will go shoot that 6pt you were after. I got a lot of fight left in me. It would take something broken to stop me. :agg:

so it was the smoke?

i\'ve never sat my doctor down to talk about asthma..i dont get that clogged lung feeling i see on TV shows. do you? is that even real or is it hollywood drama.

i simply cough at night. yesterday..my lungs had that burning feeling and i felt like i was breathing super hard and my HR was thru the roof. what does exercise induce asthma feel like? that what she said i had..i was too stunned to ask questions..i was only concerned about waking up at night with coughing spells..i was not exercising that much back then.

just googled it. should have hit the inhaler before my run..

i\'m packing my inhalers..there is a lot of smoke where i am going.

How about I do some packing for you and you do some running for me??? :tease:

I am jealous of everyone packing their stuff up. I still have a long ways to go before I am in the woods...

I am holding you to your word terry :D I have this weird feeling that I am going to find his skeleton when we get out here....
cliff, dan has been the great motivator for me, and that big bull I plan on having in my sight! if I have been anyones motivation, I am real glad to help!

Yes, running in smoke exasperates asthma. The only known death from the 2002 CO Hayman Fire is a woman in Divide with asthma. She had an acute asthma attack. Her death certificate says \"\"acute asthma attack due to or as a consequence of smoke inhalation.\" Not something to take lightly. It can be dangerous. I won\'t exercise during smoke days. Not even inside.

Exercise induced asthma is a misleading term. The correct term for my diagnoses is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

You may want to get more details from your doctor. There are many different respiratory diagnoses. It is hard to pinpoint the true cause of difficulty in breathing. The internet is not the best place to diagnose a medical condition despite all the information available.

For the first couple years living at 9,800 ft, I would tell my doctor I had trouble breathing while riding my bike up Vail Pass from Frisco. She was originally from TN and said it was from high altitude. I did 2 Ride the Rockies: 6 days riding bike 35-100 miles over Mtn Passes. I struggled to breathe during my climbs. The most challenging ride: from Grand Junction to the top of Grand Mesa...lots of riders sagged that day. I was delirious when I got to the top. Those rides would have been easier if I had an inhaler. The ride down was a blast!

I had never heard of exercise induced asthma until a runner friend told me about it. My friend insisted I get my new doctor to test me. I was tested in my doctor\'s office at about 9,800 ft by checking lung function before exercise and after exercise (running up and down office stairs). The results: reduced lung function during exercise. Normally, people have lung function go up during exercise.

Even with my inhaler, my muscles lacked oxygen when I did a Sprint Triathlon at 10,000 feet. I trained all summer at 10,000-12,000 ft. Lived at 9,800. I hit the pool for the swim and I felt the sensation of not enough oxygen to my muscles. Worst Tri ever. I struggled for the entire race. All my other races involved training at 10,000+ ft and racing down in Denver or Fort Collins at 6,000 ft. For best results: Train high, Race low.

I stink at using the inhaler...it never makes it to my airways. Last Winter, on a day hut trip, a fellow hiker, who is a doctor, told me it is best to use a spacer. I recently got a spacer, but the doctor hiker told me a tube of any kind will do.

If you wanted to experience a day of bowhunting, you are welcome to tag along on one of my day hunts. I could hand you an easy to use bite and blow call. I have an easy spot 1/2 mile from camp to do cold calling. I wouldn\'t take you up the mountain goat hills, I promise :D

Have you ever tagged along on a bowhunt?

I haven\'t ever tagged along and I really appreciate the invite! My upcoming schedule is a little crazy, but I\'ll see what happens toward mid September. I might have to take you up on that!

MTMUTT.

both my inhalers i have to use that tube thing. game changer. apparently we have to breath it in slowly and DEEPLY to get it way into our lungs.

thanks. makes packing them more difficult. :)

That is a fantastic offer and I think you would make Derek a believer.
