Iccyman001\'s 2014 hunting journal

Dan
That is pretty cool that you got your deer on camera!
And yes, that is your deer as the left G2 has the extra point.

I for one have enjoyed your journal over the past months. And many others have too as this thread is the most popular on the forum!
You did a great job this year!

Thanks!

Thank you Brad, I appreciate that.

I am very pleased with how this year has turned out and I am very lucky to still have a few hunts left.

Colorado Russ and I will be heading out for Oklahoma this weekend and then I will probably hunt the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after thanksgiving.

Then I will most likely take December off and prepare for my January 1-15th Mulie hunt.

After that it\'ll be reset time and I get to start planning for all of next years fun.

Thank you for reading it again, Brad!

Dan, great stories. If that story about the cop wasn\'t so crazy, I would call BS, but you can\'t make that stuff up!

I am glad it all worked out for you. Hopefully there is more success to come!

I wish I was making it up....

I have videos of my directing traffic around the deer and then one of me lassoing the deer and dragging it.
I did not want anyone video taping the cops shooting it.

I forgot to post these, but for starts, here is the dog I saved:

Now this was frustrating, but that is why it\'s called hunting. If you all remember, I am trying to pattern a GIANT 10 pointer out there.
Well, this was sitting at my other stand the day I killed my buck. The only reason I didn\'t hunt the other was due to wind...

Now I have to let Russ shoot him :D

I don\'t think it\'s the big 10 I am chasing, but I would love to shoot this buck. He is starting to web and I am willing to bet he is a very mature deer.

Finally, one last close up shot of the one I shot!

You have had one heck of a year so far Dan. Congrats on a real nice buck :upthumb: Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you Francis and Gary!
I am beyond excited with the buck.

I hope those MN whitetails are moving around for you two.

dan, I haven\'t sat for deer since the last part of October. November has flown by. I will try to get out for smoke pole season her in a little bit. I did pick up a nice 10 point while at work that was hit in town. barely lost any meat on him.

That is a beautiful buck....
I bet you wish you would have seen him from a stand!
At least you have meat in the freezer now.

Gear is all checked out and most loaded already. Hitting grocery store tonight and making a few things for the trip. Yes, WW, a good batch of chile and cornbread ready to go!

Been checking weather and rut reports all week long so saying I\'m excited for this hunt is an understatement. Dan has done an incredible amount of scouting and I\'m fortunate he\'s willing to share some of this with me.

May start my own hunting journal since I\'ll be rifle hunting a few days after Thanksgiving also!

I am very excited Russ!
The trailer is just about packed up minus water. Hunting gear is being washed and dried as we speak.
Tonight will be my last minute shop and then I\'ll be heading out tomorrow afternoon.

I\'m hoping to get there early enough to pull some cameras. I have two spots in mind for Saturday morning. I just hope you\'re ready to drag some meat out!

Thank you guys!

Anyone who is bored this weekend should head out. I think I packed food for about 18 people and I know Russ did the same!
We will be too full to hunt

I should head down. this will be my last weekend off for over 2 months...... I wish :lolno: good luck!
a neighbor down the street from is doing a European mount for me. $75, why not. the oldest boy is excited to have it hang on his bedroom wall. I will post pics when I get it back.

Anytime you need an escape Gary, you let me know!

The hours are counting down. I just got off the phone with the biologist who runs the area and he said the deer are still chasing.
The weather is not in our favor, but I have a feeling this will be a great trip. My one and only goal is to get Russ into some deer.
I would love to see him leave with a cooler full of meat

Well guys, I had some time to sit down and write out a little about our trip!

Mother nature has certainly won the battle this past weekend and this reminds me on how hunting is NEVER a sure thing.
Friday on my way out I discovered that a part on the back of my trailer toilet busted because of ice, my generator tire busted, and I got pulled over for having a headlight go out at some point. Luckily I always carry spare because my truck is light monster and eats them all up.

Anyways, Russ and I got into camp and it was VERY heavy with fog. We did some unpacking, drank a beer, and went to bed.
Saturday morning we woke up to coffee and Russ\'s FANTASTIC homemade biscuits and venison gravy. YUM!!!!

I put Russ in one of my most active spots and I went off to a spot I had been seeing some decent buck activity.
The morning was THICK with heavy fog. I had maybe 10-15 feet visibility. I didn\'t see a darn thing. Russ and I went in for some lunch and reviewed my cameras. The spot I had him in was most certainly the most active, so he decided to go back in there and I sat on a food plot.

Well, I didn\'t see anything, but Russ has a nice little buck come within 12 feet of him. No shot taken, but it was good to know he saw something.
That night we went home and ate some elk back straps and potatoes. Russ is a fantastic cook and must be a boy scout at heart. That man is prepared for EVERYTHING. It was very nice to see because I know how UNDERPREPARED I usually am. I need to step my game up!

Few more beers and stories and it was off to bed.

Sunday morning we ate and went into the woods. This morning was the same thing. Thick fog and no visibility. Then at 9:30 it cleared up and the sun brought the heat AND high winds. We went from 35 degrees and single digit winds to 60 degrees and 30 MPH winds....
This entire weather cycle was keeping the deer low low low.

So again we went off to eat lunch and went back out for the afternoon hunt. 35 mph winds, 63 degrees, and it\'s 11am and as we are driving to our stands... I see a deer down in the road, ass towards us. I pull over and grab my bow and start running towards it. The wind is BLOWING hard and the deer could not even hear me coming, but guess what won again.... the wind....
I got within 45 yards and this beautiful gray buck ran off. MADDENING I TELL YOU. We have NASTY weather, no deer moving for us in great spots and this buck takes an afternoon stroll like it\'s nothing!

Anyways, sat all night... nothing....

That night we went home and ate some of Russ\'s homemade pasoloe made with green chili, YUMMMMMM!
Did I mention how good of a cook he was?

Well, I had to leave because I couldn\'t get the full 4 days off, but Russ is still out there hunting away. I know he saw some more deer tonight, I hope he is able to connect tomorrow!

I had a great time with Russ and hope we can set it up again, next time with weather cooperating.
I had so many deer patterned and ready for his arrival, but you know how it goes. Everything always changes.
