Applying for Colorado high country mule deer in addition to an otc archery elk tag, last year was one for the ages and hope this year we will get into them again.

Tell us what states you applied for this year and what tag you hope for the most
I applied and received tags in Washington for Elk, Bear, Cougar, & Deer. I'm focusing on Elk and Deer. I've also applied for numerous special hunts and plan to do as much fresh water fishing while on the trail as I can.

Tell us what you?re most excited for this season

I'm really excited to find more nontechnical scramble hikes to prime glassing spots. Just finding spots to glass was surprising difficult as I've just been starting out.

I've been working out pretty serious. With all the videos from all these hunters makes a guy wish i was up there. I can remember huffing and puffing while i was there last year. Make sure you start early with the weight loss. I'm down 25lbs. Also applying for other hunts this year. Pronghorn and possibly Moose. good luck fellas.

First year Elk Hunting. I just bought Rocky Mountain Threat Elk Grunt Bugle tube along with to two elk diaphragm Rockstar and All star from gohunt. Excited for this upcoming season.[/color]

I've been hiking under load with big water reservoirs  in my ruck. I'm running for the first time in years as I actually have reason.

I'm hiking and camping as much as possible as I test out gear which takes up a surprising amount of thought and time.

I've also been studying hunting technique, floral and fauna observation, as well as animal sign and track with my readings.

Also lots of podcasts and youtube. tons.

I have been working out to perpare for this upcoming season. No picture yet but hope to have some soon. No advice as this will be my first year hunting elk.

A piece of advice I would offer is to jump in with both feet. I haven't had anyone to really ask questions of so I've learned a lot from youtube which is a great resource but it's also filled with marketing so I own a lot of Under Armour and Vortex. Good products but I'm a victim of marketing.

When buying stuff wait for sales and bulk up. All the big box stores will do big sales and major federal holidays and around hunting season. Black Friday is a huge day and I'll be saving for that for months. All of the gear manufacturers will have massive sales.

You spend more time looking than doing anything else so don't skimp on optics.
Buy a really good pair of binoculars and a really well built and light tripod thats tall enough for you to stand up comfortably and glass. Skip the spotting scope for now. It's just extra weight and the eye relief on binos is much better for long glassing sessions. Over the last 6 months I've rarely even got to a point where I needed my spotting scope or where my binos didn't work just as well. I'm actually selling my current binos and spotting scope to buy a really nice binocular setup.

I would also advise that you put some thought into what you carry on your person vs what you carry on your pack. this becomes important if you want to stash your pack quickly, drop a way point, and move out to track without the load. Spending time disconnecting yourself from the bag with the gear your need becomes tedious.

Go out after a good snow.

I’ve been hitting the exercise bike this winter to get in shape for this fall and hoping to get out in the woods when the weather improves. Still snowing down to 1500’ feet here today.

One piece of advise I can give to anyone getting into elk hunting for the first time is to get a mentor. I learned on my own and it has been a looong learning curve!

This year I just put in for CO. Moose, Elk, Deer and may grab an archery Bear license when they go on sale.

To prepare this year I have a scouting schedule, and game cams to put up.

Advice - do cardio and lift heavy things, chasing Elk is rough business!

I wish I could get the moose tag but it won?t happen, this is my first year putting in for it so I probably have 10-15 to go before I get one.
