My biggest advice for those that are thinking about elk hunting is "DO IT" You only live once, get out there and do it. Biggest problem you will have once you do it is you will want to go every year and it becomes a addiction.

I live for elk hunting! Think about it, dream about it, talk about it all the time. I think I am getting annoying to my friends, and my husband who goes with me on my planned hunts. I do all the planning and research, and gathering of gear, knowledge, and tags. I had to make him read some of the elk 101 modules so he could do some calling for me. Without Elk 101, University of Elk hunting I know we would not have had the success we did have. We did OTC archery elk in Colorado last year, and set up and called several elk in close enough to see. Some were spikes or too small to be legal, but three times times we had legal bulls within 15 yards. My first one, my adrenaline got the best of me and I missed. The other two, If our shot placement would have been better, and if there had been a blood trail,  we both would have tagged out. I still consider it a successful hunt, we learned so much and had such a great time. We plan to be back again this year if we don't draw tags somewhere new.

I applied for both myself and my husband in
Arizona - not successful
Wyoming- not successful
New Mexico - hoping
Kentucky - hoping

Bought points in
Utah
Will buy points in
Montana and Colorado

Probably hunt OTC archery in
Oregon and Colorado

If I had to recommend some things that are a must have for elk hunting especially for the newer/younger hunters I would say study up on Elk hunting University from Elk 101 so you don't waste your time wondering the mountains. Get OnXMaps, my favorite tool, I had it on my phone, downloaded maps and put in airplane mode and never got lost, tracked everywhere I went, marked where I saw elk or elk bedding areas and was able to get back into those areas and get in on elk. Of course, elk 101 tells you where to start your looking!

Advice: Getting in shape. Partly to help many of us flatlanders in preparing for the miles of hiking, but will also help with altitude, may reduce some extra lbs you're hauling about and thinking about September provides all kinds of good outlets while you wait for your season to open :)

All kinds of scenery to enjoy while out hunting.

Share one piece of advice you?d give to anyone interested in elk hunting
Average for first elk kill if I remember correctly is 7 years. Stick with it and learn all you can. Purchase EHU.

The one piece of advice I give when hunting elk is to stay consistent and pattering the elk. Stay as light and mobile as you can.

We are already getting ready for 2018, going down to set trail cams for the summer and a horn hunting trip to my hole.

I will be hitting the gym and mountain biking this summer to get into shape AGAIN, should be in some what good shape from cat hunting all winter.

I will be hunting Idaho and will hopefully be drawing an Iowa Whitetail tag this year as well. Can't wait!

I am most excited for my Whitetail tag, just because it has a lot of sentimental value to it.  This will be the last year I get to hunt my families property as we are selling it at the end of the year.
