Last year was my first year elk hunting. My advice to rookies is to workout and shoot your bow a lot! Especially if you aren't from mountain country. Elk101 course is a big help too.
One area I see a lot of hunter making is walking near or in bedding areas, not paying attention to the wind. During archery season its really hard to sneek on a elk herd especially if you don't know they are there. Find a vantage point ,find the elk then proceed to put yourself in place. Remember if you bump an elk out of there bedding area you will not see them again and may have ruined it for other hunters in that area.
Currently I'm working on getting in better shape than I was last year. That's my physical fitness goal every year - just be better than I was the previous year.
Colorado has so many hunting opportunities it is difficult to put in for other states. The key is finding time if you happen to draw one or more of those out of state tags. Nice option to have though.
I applied for elk in New Mexico, Nevada, and will be applying for my Wyoming tag here soon. At this point I really want to pull one of those dream New Mexico tags.
I have been ramping up my workouts so I can hit the mountains hard. I will also be breaking out the bow soon to get those arrows flying straight and true.
I'm most excited to hopefully arrow my first bull. Let year I came really close, but ran out of time. I'm excited to get back into this new spot where we found a lot of elk!
For preparation I'll continue doing cardio and shooting my bow. I'll be going a lot this summer and trying to figure out a few more water sources and feeding/bedding areas
