I most excited about taking in the views, smells and awesomeness off the Colorado Rockies... getting my first Elk would be really cool too, but memories of a great hunt are more important.
In preparation for the hunt I'm doing Shaun-T's Insanity, upper strength on freeweights, running and hikes with 35-40lb backpack. Determination levels are sky high.
In preparation for this fall, I?m hitting th gym. I do elliptical for cardio and lift some weights for arms and legs. As the season gets closer, I?ll start doing a 7 mile route near my house with my pack. I?m also shooting my bow more this year.
My best advice for someone thinking about elk hunting, just do it. I was given this advice when I was a lot younger and didn?t follow it. I would have loved to been in the mountains when I was younger, skinny and healthier. You?re never promised a tomorrow so just get out there at the first opportunity.
Got a new bow and some new calls. Been watching a ton of videos of elk in the wild just doing their thing. Getting in better shape needs to become a priority here...
Best advice: THE ELK ARE THERE. You may have been walking for days and not seen one yet, but keep your head in it. Always play the wind, always keep stealthy - they may be right over that next ridge. If you let your guard down, you may blow an opportunity and kick yourself for it!!
