Went turkey hunting and scouting yesterday in Oklahoma.
7-8 miles covered with a 50 lb pack... and shot a small jake!

Congrats....small jakes are delicious!

As a person gets older for sure keeping in shape is beneficial!

In fact, Jaquomo [Lou] wrote an article about fitness as you get older and it will be in newstands next month and the featured person is Paul Nevarre - he is 75 and last fall he hunted solo, miles into a wilderness area and shot a cow elk.
Im looking forward to reading it!

As far as myself, I switched my lifestyle up a couple months ago [with the help of Midwest :)]
Im down a few pounds but more added muscle and feel great!

Yogurt is my friend.... :)

Don\'t get me wrong... I like you younger guys that are fit and robust.... More so if I ever kill another elk so I can call upon ya to \"help\" get it out for me... :D :D

Shoot... I\'m old and fat and was once young, lean and mean but sometimes life throws ya a curve ball you just can\'t quite hit.... :downthumb: :downthumb:

Keep up the good work folks... But remember one day if life throws ya that same curve ball and ya miss it, there is still light at the end of the tunnel...

To touch on this topic.......
I\'ve been living a healthy and fit lifestyle longer than I\'ve been bow hunting and before I really picked up on hunting hardcore.
It\'s my life style choice to be in the top shape I can be. I\'m no monster, but I can handle any physical challenge or test in front of me because of how I train.
My lifestyle has also influenced other people to live a healthier lifestyle and that is a great feeling.

I don\'t think people have started doing this specifically (working out/healthy lifestyle) just for phrase.
To me it\'s an advantage. Can an older out of shape person kill an elk? Absolutely!!!! No one would disagree with that.
Can someone who is in shape have an advantage on their overall hunt? Absolutely.

We practice calling to call better.
We practice shooting to shoot better.
So I also feel that if we practice or train for the elements of the mountains, we will perform better.

Second part of the convo..... phrase.....
I will agree social media has changed peoples mindset on needing reward and phrase. (not everyone)
Whether it\'s Facebook likes, extra youtube comments, etc....
I think that gets some people more excited than the hunt and harvest itself and I don\'t like or agree with it.

I think there is a fine balance and most people go overboard.
It really makes us appreciate people like Will, Lou and others who we know are hardcore hunters, but share the experience in a good light.
They don\'t write their stories for phrase or \"e-status\".
They do it to benefit all of us. They write it for the diehards, the passionate, the people who cannot do it any longer, etc.

Took the mutts on a 5 mile hike with 40# pack. I will be the first to agree that one doesn\'t need to be in shape like Cam Hanes to be an efficient and successful elk Hunter; however, does staying physically fit during the off season help...of course! Personally, I\'m no Hanes and never will be. I\'m a middle aged average person who has put on extra pounds that I should and can lose. Hunting is my motivation to get and stay in shape. It\'s keeps me accountable. It keeps me motivated to get to the gym on those days I would rather not.
I would agree that Facebook has led to a fraction of hunters that feel the need to brag about their physical prowess, wear their shirts two sizes too small, and belittle others that aren\'t as physically gifted. But, I know and believe that this is a fad and not characteristict of the majority of hunters out there. I don\'t have a Facebook account and most hunting buddies don\'t either. So, I think the posting for praise and narcissistic tendicies, while polarized by social media, is ridiculous...I don\'t think it is as wide spread as some.

That was a good thread, Brad. Something I don\'t think many of us work on enough...I know I don\'t. I do one weird thing every morning to check my balance, though....I alway put on my socks while standing on one foot. Next time, I\'ll try it with my eyes closed!

I do something in the morning to check my balance too.

I get out of my bed, stand up next to it and if I don\'t fall I\'m good to go for a little while. :upthumb: :upthumb:

LOL! I guess we should all be thankful just to wake up on the right side of the turf!

This is why I exercise.

First: I want to make this years hunt a little easier on my body by being in shape.

Second: I hope by staying in shape I add a few more years to Hunt.

It is that simple for me.

Crushed leg day with some squats, deadlifts, leg curls and a few more exercises... I used to hate leg day but it is starting to become my favorite workout. Great job to everyone else working out. Keep up the hard work

I always do my workouts in the evening when I get home from work. Lately I have been doing a lot of the Train to Hunt workouts. I plan to do the TTH Challenge in PA this July. Generally I work out 4 days per week . Mon-Tues and Thur-Fri typically. Lots of Anerobic stuff lately.
